In 2020, Patrick Mahomes was considered a good, but not necessarily the greatest quarterback in the NFL. He had just finished his second season as a starter and won his first Super Bowl, and he wasn’t even married to his now-wife, Brittany Mahomes.
In other words, Mahomes was starting his career and life, yet he and Brittany decided to invest in the city of Kansas City, in a sport particularly important to Brittany: Women’s Soccer. In 2020, Brittnay bought a large stake in the Kansas City Current, and last year, Patrick joined her, making the two major owners of the team.
Brittany and Patrick Mahomes Bought, Became Co-Owners of Kansas City Current
Today, the NWSL (National Women’s Soccer League) begins. In an interview with ESPN, Brittany and Patrick Mahomes explained why they invested in the Kansas City Current, and the NWSL as a whole. Brittany, who played goalie in college, went on to play professionally in Iceland for a year shared the following:
“It’s an honor to partner, and bring this vision to life. It’s remarkable to be part of history… We’re going to try to bring a Championship home.” – Britany Mahomes
Patrick Mahomes’s opportunity to invest in Kansas City is important to him, which he says has given him so much support. He added the following:
“It’s been remarkable to be in this stadium, and see these fans. It’s going to be a historic day…. The city of Kansas City has invested so much in me, I just want to give back the best way I can.. I have a young daughter… It’s great to give these women the platform they deserve. We want to build a stadum to match their talent.” – Patrick Mahomes
Today, CPKC Stadium is opening, the first stadium dedicated exclusively to women’s sports worldwide. While other stadiums may primarily focus on women’s sports, they were built originally for men’s sports or are used for other purposes. While CPKC Stadium may host other events in the future, it was built and planned from day one to be a stadium for women’s soccer.
The stadium holds 11,500 fans. The new stadium is seen as a monumental milestone in women’s sports.
Women’s Soccer Is One of the Fastest Growing Sports in the U.S.
The NWSL is one of the U.S. Professional Sports leagues that is seeing some of the fastest growth in terms of the percentage of fans tuning in and watching of any sport, men or women. In the late 2010s, there were struggles and questions as to whether the league could survive long-term, with teams such as the Utah Royals having to shut down their operations (which ironically later became the Kansas City Current).
The last few years, however, have seen the NWSL expand to twelve teams, and with big-time investors such as the Mahomes’, Serena Williams, and Natalie Portman, the league now appears to have backing and money to back it up. Today, the NWSL has the highest overall average attendance of any women’s professional sport, although the WNBA could soon pass that up with stars such as Caitlin Clark and Sabrina Ionescu, bringing more attention to the game.
