In a case of the rich possibly getting richer, the Oregon Ducks are making fierce efforts to add one of the top quarterback recruits in the country to their roster with the pursuit of Centennial High School phenom, Husan Longstreet. The high school star made an announcement on Monday that he has narrowed his choices down to eight schools, with the Ducks being one of them.
Recruit Competition for Longstreet is Stiff
However, as to be expected, Longstreet has several big time suitors who are trying to get him to come their way. This includes defending national champion Michigan, SEC powers Auburn, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M, and the ACC’s Miami Hurricanes. With visits planned for several of the programs in the coming weeks, LongStreet will certainly be a high priority on many coaches’ recruiting lists.
The Oregon Quarterback Room is Getting Crowded
With the departure of star quarterback Bo Nix, a scramble has ensued to find his replacement. Next year will be the first for Oregon as a member of the Big 10, and with conference and national title aspirations, Nix’s shoes will be difficult to fill.
Oregon wasted little time in hitting the transfer portal grabbing Dillon Gabriel from Oklahoma, and then heading to California to nab former UCLA quarterback Dante Moore. This combined with the three star high school recruit from Arizona, Luke Moga, means that adding Longstreet to that mix in 2025 could lead to a brutal competition for that starting spot in the coming years.
Longstreet Has Impressive Numbers
The Centennial product is a four-star recruit and is currently ranked 94th nationally, and is listed as the number nine quarterback in the country by 247 Sports. Last season he led Centennial to a 9-3 record, completing 199 of 298 pass attempts for 3013 yards with 24 touchdown against only six interceptions. In addition to his throwing abilities, Longstreet also proved to be incredibly mobile, carrying the ball 85 times for a total of 645 yards.
Before atteding Centennial, he was the starter for Inglewood High, where he led them to an 13-1 record and trip to the Division 2 CIF Southern Section Championship game. To date, his combined efforts between the two programs has been a mind boggling 64 touchdowns with only 13 interceptions and nearly 7000 yards in total passing.
Even More High School QBs Arriving Next Year
The Ducks though are not placing all their eggs in one basket, as four-star quarterback and legacy Akili Smith Jr. has already committed to Oregon. Smith will be arriving next fall from Lincoln High in San Diego, and is currently the number 74th ranked recruit in the nation, and the number six quarterback in the entire class.
Last season Smith led his team to an 11-1 record and threw for 2,431 yards, and 25 touchdowns against only five interceptions. In addition, he is every bit as mobile, averaging more than five yards a carry and running for three touchdowns.
Ducks Are Trying to Make Inroads into the California QB Market
The last few years have been a struggle for Oregon to acquire offensive stars from the California market. With the move into the Big 10 coupled with USC intensifying their efforts to nail down the local market, the challenge in acquiring skill position players on the offensive side has increased.
However, their defensive efforts have paid dividends, not only in the California market, but also on a nationwide basis. This was demonstrated by the number one recruit in the country for the 2026 class, defensive lineman Jahkeem Stewart from St. Augustine High in Louisiana, scheduling a campus visit in late April, as was reported by Max Torres of Duck Digest.
Expectations are High for the 2024-25 Season
Some early predictions have Oregon finishing at or near the top of the Big 10, with USA Today listing them in their “Way Too Early” predictions as finishing on top of the heap. This coupled with Oregon currently finishing second in the conference’s recruiting rankings according to Grid Iron Heroic’s Joshua Valdez, will keep the expectations high.
