The Oklahoma football team has sat within the AP Top 25 since the final week of the 2022 season. Since the beginning of last year, the Oklahoma Sooners are 13-3, with wins over rival Texas, a respectable West Virginia program, and top non-Power Five school Tulane. However, they will face one of their toughest test of the Brent Venables era on Saturday, with the No. 6 ranked Tennessee Volunteers traveling to Norman, Oklahoma.
Per the sportsbooks, Oklahoma football is a touchdown underdog despite holding the 15th spot in the revised AP Top 25. Oklahoma football has also registered a 26-3 record at Gaylor Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium since 2020. The lopsided spread marks the first time in nearly half a century that a ranked Sooners squad will host a contest as more than a four-point underdog.
Oklahoma Football Playing Upset Role on Saturday
According to college football reporter Eli Lederman of ESPN:
Tennessee is a touchdown favorite at Oklahoma in Week 4. Per @ESPNStatsInfo, it’s the first time the Sooners have been a touchdown home underdog since November 21, 1998, vs Texas Tech. A ranked Oklahoma team hasn’t been a home dog of more than 4 points since at least 1978.
The Oklahoma football program is one of the best in the country, posting 42 double-digit winning seasons across 115 years. They have also won 57 bowl games, including seven national titles. However, despite the 2023 rendition of the Oklahoma Sooners owning a 3-0 record heading into Saturday’s contest against the Tennessee Volunteers, they will be a home underdog of at least a touchdown for the first time since 1998. In late November of that year, Oklahoma, who was 4-6 at the time, hosted a 7-3 Texas Tech squad, with the latter being a considerable favorite. Oklahoma would win head coach John Blake’s final game 20-17, with the program hiring Bob Stoops in the offseason.
Saturday’s spread also marks the first time a ranked Oklahoma football team has been a four-point underdog since at least the 1978 season. It’s likely Lederman’s research only goes back to that year, with the ’78 Sooners going 11-1 under head coach Barry Switzer. Tennessee will enter this weekend’s game, outscoring their opponents 191-13 in three games, albeit against Chattanooga, N.C. State, and Kent State.
