The Oklahoma football program will enter next weekend’s home clash against the Tulane Green Wave undefeated and comfortably sitting inside the AP Poll Top 25. The Oklahoma Sooners have outscored their opponents 67-15 across the first two games, with Zac Alley and Brent Venables’ defense leading the way. However, the offensive production has largely fluctuated, with quarterback Jackson Arnold and co routinely laboring against presumably inferior competition.
Last Saturday, Oklahoma’s offense hit a new season low, albeit being only Week 2. They allowed three sacks, fumbled twice, and totaled only 249 yards in a 16-12 win over the Houston Cougars. Although offense coordinator Seth Littrell is more than likely in the lab getting the offensive playbook fine-tuned, former head coach Bob Stoops offered his insights on the current state of OU’s offense.
Longtime Oklahoma Football Coach Bob Stoops Discusses Sooners’ Offense

In an interview with The REF (Norman/OKC: 1400 AM), national championship-winning head coach Bob Stoops spoke on Oklahoma football’s offensive miscues from last Saturday’s 16-12 win:
Not to make excuses, of course, you know the injuries at receiver and through the offensive line haven’t helped, but we’ve got to be more productive than that overall. There’s no way around it. We’ve just got to execute better, play better, you know, play design, whatever it is. Otherwise, it is going to be a long year.
Oklahoma football’s offense has dealt with injuries in the early going of the 2024 season, with pass-catchers Nic Anderson, Jalil Farooq, and Jayden Gibson either out for the season or unavailable in last Saturday’s narrow win against Houston. Nevertheless, Stoops did not use the decimated receiver room as an excuse for the Sooners, instead stressing the team to find more consistency on offense.
After an up-and-down season opener against the Temple Owls, Oklahoma produced just 249 total yards last weekend. Quarterback Jackson Arnold went 19-of-32 but tallied only 174 passing yards, two touchdowns, and a pick. The former five-star recruit has not consistently pushed the ball downfield nor produced significant chunk plays for the offense. The lack of production from the running backs was more concerning, with Gavin Sawchuk, Taylor Tatum, and Jovantae Barnes collecting 50 rushing yards and 17 carries. After rushing four times for 66 yards and a touchdown in the season opener, Tatum had only one touch in the victory over Houston.
