Despite a 51-3 win in their season opener against the Temple Owls, many Oklahoma football fans remained skeptical of the offense following an up-and-down performance. After all, the final score seemed deceiving, with quarterback Jackson Arnold throwing for just 141 yards on 25 pass attempts while being the victim of a sack three times. On Saturday, Oklahoma Sooners fans had their worst fears realized, with the now-SEC squad narrowly beating the Houston Cougars at home 16-12.
With Oklahoma’s offensive problems coming full circle on Saturday, many fans quickly pounced on quarterback Jackson Arnold, play-caller Seth Littrell, and the offensive line after the final whistle. Despite losing the time of possession, allowing three sacks, and nearly losing the turnover battle, OU will remain undefeated heading into next weekend’s matchup against the Tulane Green Wave.
Slim Victory Lives Oklahoma Football Fans Disappointed
According to Tennessee Volunteers’ superfan BigOrangePunch on Twitter:
Colorado – spanked
Kentucky – embarrassed
Michigan – cheaters proved to be frauds
Bama – looked terrible
Oklahoma – looked worse
Notre Dame – worst L of the decade
Vols – Win Been a pretty good day
Saying Oklahoma football looked worse than the Alabama Crimson Tide is an understatement, with the Sooners winning 16-12 at home against the Houston Cougars as a 28-point favorite. Oklahoma looked flat on offense, tallying 249 yards, well behind Houston at 318. Meanwhile, they allowed three sacks of quarterback Jackson Arnold while the passer struggled to push the ball downfield, throwing for 174 yards on 32 pass attempts. More notably, Oklahoma posted a brutal 78 rushing yards on 28 carries.
Defensively, OU shined, forcing an interception, recovering a fumble, and holding the Cougars to a laughable 58 rush yards on 35 carries. Additionally, they ended the game when Gracen Halton forced a safety after blowing up an outside zone rush deep into Houston territory. Nevertheless, Oklahoma football fans were not happy with the overall performance, expressing their frustration via Twitter:
Okay.
It’s officially acceptable to absolutely panic about how this season is going to go.

The ugliest win I have ever seen. Do not get it twisted, Houston is a BAD football team.
This offense is at DEFCON 1 level of concern in my opinion. Absolutely nothing was good enough tonight.
This has to get a lot better and FAST. If not, this season could go sideways quickly

I mean … half the team didn’t show up the for the group assignment.

Never thought I'd utter these words. I miss Jeff Lebby

If Sooners aren’t gifted that phantom “muffed punt” at the beginning of the game, this game ends in a loss and I cannot be convinced otherwise

I'm sorry, I'm not nearly as bullish on my Sooners after tonight. We're down our two best receivers but Jackson Arnold hasn't exactly seized control of the job. As Venables just said, "We deserved to lose."

Largest total yard discrepancy (-69) in a win since West Virginia in 2016 (-94). #Sooners
