College football spring practices are always fun, and Ohio State started theirs this week. Everyone was waiting to see how the quarterback position would shake out through the first few days of spring camp.
Ohio State is in a quarterback competition between transfer quarterback Will Howard and third-year player Devin Brown.
Is Devin Brown Ohio State’s QB 1 At The Moment
Many think Howard will be the Week One starter, but a video came out on Thursday from Chase Brown, who is with the Eleven Warriors. The footage showed Devin Brown taking handoff reps with running back TreVeyon Henderson and Will Howard taking reps with running back Quinshon Judkins.
Ohio State’s quarterbacks work on handoffs with the Buckeyes’ running backs.

We can look at this in two different ways. One is that Brown is penciled in as quarterback one during spring ball, and it’s his job to lose. The most likely scenario is that Brown is getting first-team reps because he has been here the longest out of every quarterback in the Buckeye quarterback room.
Spring practices have only been going on for a few days, so there’s limited information to be had. Since Howard first stepped onto campus in January of this year, it makes sense for him to be the backup.
Also, Judkins transferred from Ole Miss two months ago, so maybe the Buckeyes are putting the transfers together and letting the players who have been there the longest, Brown and Henderson, lead the way.
Spring Ball Will Be Huge For Both Quarterbacks
Spring practices will be crucial for the quarterbacks because this is the time to get a leg up in competition and head into fall camp if you show you can ball out.
Brown and Howard will compete to be the starting quarterback, and both will have to learn a new playbook.
Howard was going to have to anyway since he is coming to a new team, but the Buckeyes hired a new offensive coordinator, Chip Kelly, last month, and he will be bringing in a new style that Brown will also have to learn.
Last year, the Buckeyes had a camp battle between Kyle McCord and Brown, and now it’s Howard vs. Brown; it should be exciting because they both have the same style of play. They are both excellent with their legs, which McCord was not good at, so that could help jump-start Buckeyes offense this season.
