The back-to-back Super Bowl champions need some help in the receiving corps. With reports suggesting that other teams are reluctant to trade top wide receivers to the Chiefs, they may have to turn to free agency. This is where they’ll find the recently released and well-known ring chaser, Odell Beckham Jr., who would be a perfect fit.
Odell Beckham Jr. Would Be a Perfect Fit with the Chiefs
In 2023, the 31-year-old receiver racked up 565 receiving yards and three touchdowns. By most metrics, this is below average for a number one receiver and more closely resembles a number two. However, as we’ve seen in the past, Odell can be a big game performer and shine on a team with talent around him, as he did with the 2021 Los Angeles Rams. Odell Beckham Jr. still possesses talent and football IQ, and with Patrick Mahomes, a much better passer than Lamar Jackson, he would likely have more opportunities to make those spectacular plays we’re used to seeing. On the Kansas City Chiefs, Odell Beckham would be slated as a second or even third option, with an emerging young receiver, Rasheed Rice, and the always dominant Travis Kelce still suiting up for Kansas City.
Kansas Needs Wide Receivers
Despite the Kansas City Chiefs’ recent Super Bowl win and their newly established defense looking incredible, nobody can deny they had a receiver problem in 2023. A major media talking point all season was the defending Super Bowl champions leading the league in drops, suggesting a lack of discipline and perhaps even complacency. However, unsurprisingly, when the playoffs rolled around, the Chiefs seemed to flip the switch and make plays all the way to a second title. Nevertheless, in the NFL, there’s always room for improvement, and most would agree that the biggest concern for Kansas City is the receiving corps. Unfortunately, getting a big-name receiver in their prime looks like an unlikely option, whether due to teams’ unwillingness to trade with the reigning dynasty or because of tight cap space. The Chiefs will have to look for alternatives and Odell Beckham Jr. has been known to take a pay cut when there’s a possibility of winning a championship.
Odell Beckham Jr. Would Bring a Veteran Presence to Kansas City
Odell Beckham Jr. is a versatile weapon. He can catch in traffic and burn safeties over the top, but he can also take check downs and move the chains with his ability to run after the catch. Rasheed Rice would most likely be prioritized over Odell Beckham Jr., who would take on more of a mentor role and provide a veteran presence in the wide receiver room, something Kansas City secretly needs. He will hold the other receivers accountable while still producing on the field.
Making a move for Odell Beckham Jr. this offseason would be exactly what Kansas City needs. He would bring continuity, leadership, and accountability to the receiver room while also giving Patrick Mahomes another reliable option to throw to. Let’s admit it, we could all see Odell Beckham Jr. going for 100 yards and a touchdown in the divisional round wearing a Chiefs uniform.
