College football fans reacted to the College Football Playoff management committee’s decision for the news playoff rules ahead of the 2024 season. The rules seem rather harsh for Notre Dame.
New College Football Playoff rules help Power-5 conference teams
Per GH Media, only four conference championship winners are eligible for the first-round bye in the new 12-team format:
The current method that was announced for the 12-team playoff is the “5+7” method. This means that the five highest-ranked conference champions along with the seven highest-ranked at large teams will make their way into the CFP.
Notre Dame is screwed
Because the Irish do not play in a conference, the committee effectively punished the school for being independent. As Joe Pompilano points out, the Irish would have to win four games in a row, even if they were the number one team in the country heading into the playoff.
The new College Football Playoff will put the 4 highest ranked conference champions as seeds 1 through 4. That means that even if Notre Dame is the #1 ranked team in the country, they would get the #5 seed, requiring them to win 4 straight games to win a title. That’s brutal.

Fans reacted to the Irish being hurt by the new format
The Irish may be forced to join a conference to stay competitive in the new landscape of college sports. They may as well, as the Big Ten and SEC are pretty much starting a Super League of their own in the sport.
Here are the best takes of fans reacting to the Irish being punished by the committee for not being in a conference.
Brutal 🤣. Notre Dame has easier path than the conference champs who would have beaten most likely a higher ranked team at neutral site to win conference title and then have to win 3 straight.

maybe they should get into a conference then

Until they join a conference, Notre Dame is the cancer of college football and this is 100% justified.

Notre Dame is so irrelevant WE HAVE TO TALK ABOUT IT EVERY MONTH THAT NOTRE DAME NEEDS TO JOIN A CONFERENCE BECAUSE THEY ARE DOOMED 🙄🙄🙄🙄☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️ pic.twitter.com/tuFTsP1t79

Isn't that true of the four conference champions as well? The only difference is that one of their games is their conference championship, which Notre Dame doesn't have to play.

The funniest thing about this is thinking that Notre Dame will even sniff a number 1 ranking in November/December

Notre Dame needs to quit the games and finally join the ACC in football where they are in every other sport

Love it when Notre Dame proclaims themselves to be above joining a conference but then whines about not getting the benefits of being in a conference. I’m sure the ACC would welcome them, I think they’ve closed the door on the Big Ten too many times
