The Notre Dame Fighting Irish lost 23-34 to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the College Football National Championship Game. Since their 2024-25 season officially ended on Monday, Notre Dame players have until Friday, January 24, to decide whether to declare for the 2025 NFL Draft or enter the transfer portal for the 2025 season. Entering Thursday, the Fighting Irish have already lost three players to the transfer portal, but that number is expected to increase.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish’s interior offensive lineman is expected to hit the portal
According to Pete Nakos of On3, the Fighting Irish are expected to lose their backup-turned-starting center, Pat Coogan, to the transfer portal for the 2025 season. Coogan, a graduate, will have one final year of college eligibility remaining. Now that he is available, he is considered one of the best remaining interior offensive linemen available in the portal.

Here’s a quick review of his collegiate career
Pat Coogan committed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as a three-star recruit for the 2021 season. After not playing during the 2021 season and only playing three snaps in 2022, Coogan won the starting left guard job for the 2023 season. He played 13 games and allowed 25 pressures, 17 hurries, seven QB hits, and one sack while posting a 64.7 pass block, a 65.2 run block, and a 66.1 overall PFF grade.
Coogan did not open the season as a starter. However, that changed when starting center Ashton Craig suffered a season-ending ACL tear in Week 3 against the Purdue Boilermakers. He finished the last 13 games and did a decent job in relief of Craig and gained notoriety for being a team leader and hypeman during the College Football Playoff. He allowed eight pressures, five hurries, two QB hits, and one sack while posting a 79 pass block, a 69 run block, and a 72.1 overall PFF grade.
