Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Barry will propose a new trade deadline for the upcoming NFL season.
Mary Kay Cabot reported on Tuesday at the NFL Combine that the general manager for the Cleveland Browns will be proposing a new rule change regarding the trade deadline.
Andrew states that the NFL needs to retroactively correct the trade deadline date after adding a regular season game. He continues by saying that proactively, if the NFL wants to add an 18th game, the rules should change to allow for a larger trade window.
Logic over Tradition
All in all, Andrew Barry makes sense. The trade deadline has not moved with the increase in games. The logical way to go about things would be if the season increases one week, so would the trade deadline.
The other resounding information is the percentage of seasons other major sports use versus the NFL. The MLB and NBA have their trade deadline at 65% of their calendar days within the season. The NHL is at 78% through the season for a trade deadline.
The National Football League currently has their trade deadline set at 45%.
The Proposal to the NFL
Andrew Barry concludes that his proposal would be 55% of the way through the calendar. If a typical regular season is 122 days (the 2024 season will be September 5th through January 5th), 55% would be 67 days. That would take us to after week ten of the NFL calendar.
According to Andrew Barry’s rule proposal, November ninth of tenth would be the proposed trade deadline for the 2024 season.
