NFL REPORT: Russell Wilson Could Shockingly Get Released Before 2024 Season

The 2024 NFL free agency has had some crazy movement of star players. The Pittsburgh Steelers made some major moves getting, rid of both their quarterbacks and bringing in both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.

Wilson signed a one year $1.2 million contract to be with the team, which is probably the cheapest deal a Super Bowl winning quarterback ever made. He can do that because the Denver Broncos will be paying $38 million this year, even though he will not be on the team. However, in a shocking report, Wilson could potentially get cut before the season.

NFL Analysts Says Russell Wilson Could Get Cut

While it has been heavily reported that Wilson will be the started for the Steelers, Adam Schefter has said not so fast. If Wilson does not beat out Justin Fields than the team will have no problem moving off of him. Schefter was quoted saying:

“The fact of the matter is they have the luxury of letting this play out during camp and doing whatever is best for that football team,” Schefter said, via Steeler Nation. “There is no commitment, obligation, loyalty to anyone of these guys. They didn’t pay very much for either one of them. I even had an executive say if Justin Fields outplayed him during training camp, they could see them moving on from him before the season.”

The fact that this is even coming out is quite shocking, but at the same time Schefter is right that they did not pay any real money or picks for either of these guys.

While Wilson should be the starter for the 2024 season with Fields as the backup and learning from him, there is still a chance that Fields outplays Wilson in training camp. Fields has shown that he can be productive at times and for the past three season Russell has shown the opposite.

Head coach Mike Tomlin has reportedly already informed Fields that Wilson will be the starter, but that does mean that it is a permanent decision. The reason why you go and get Fields is not for him to just sit on the bench forever. Fields has real potential and it would not be surprising if he completely outplays Wilson in training camp. As of now though, Wilson is the starter until further notice.
