Terry McLaurin is in a race to fitness right now after the Pro Bowl wide receiver suffered a turf toe injury in the Washington Commanders’ 29-28 preseason win over the Baltimore Ravens on Monday. With the start of the season just a couple of weeks away, Commanders fans are holding their collective breath as they await any news on the status of their WR1.

Unfortunately, the latest update on McLaurin is not very optimistic in terms of his chances for Washington’s season opener against the Arizona Cardinals on September 10. League insider Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that at this point, McLaurin remains “uncertain” for Week 1:

“While Washington has expressed optimism about the status of Terry McLaurin, who suffered a turf toe injury on Monday night, the Commanders’ wide receiver is uncertain for the regular-season opener vs. the Arizona Cardinals, per sources. McLaurin will work to be ready for the start of the season, but it’s too early to say whether he will be. His injury typically is a multiple-week injury,” Schefter wrote.

While this recent report does not bode well for McLaurin’s availability for opening night, the silver lining here is that tests have reportedly shown “no major damage” on the Commanders star’s toe (h/t John Keim of ESPN). All things considered, the former Ohio State standout appears to have dodged a major bullet here.

Terry McLaurin, who is coming off his first Pro Bowl selection last season, is now entering his fifth year with the Commanders. He’s proven to be a key player on head coach Ron Rivera’s squad, and it goes without saying that McLaurin will play a significant role for Washington in 2023. With regard to his injury, we should get more substantial updates as Week 1 approaches.
