The NFL and Roger Goodell have been synonymous with each other for years now.   Under then-Commissioner Pete Rozelle, Goodell began his NFL career as an administrative intern in 1982. During a letter-writing campaign, the league office and the 28 teams were contacted to secure the position. He joined the New York Jets as an intern in 1983, but returned to the league office in 1984 to work as a public relations assistant.

Fast forward to 2006, Goodell became the 6th NFL Commissioner.  Today, his future in the NFL got a huge update.

On Wednesday, Nation Football League owners extended Commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract until March 2027, ending speculation that he would step down when his previous deal expired.

Owners met in New York for a two-day meeting where the announcement was made.

Over the past decade, Mr. Goodell has led the league through a period of explosive expansion, nearly tripling revenue to about $20 billion. It is unlikely that the owners will replace him, despite some missteps, especially concerning suspensions involving players and coaches.

No matter what you think of the International Series, no one can deny that it has brought more money to the league and its owners. Additionally, he managed the league through the Covid-19 pandemic without missing any games. His steps to make the game safer have also received mixed reviews, but the overall reaction from the players seems positive.

This extension will take him to over 20 years as the commissioner of the National Football League.   The only commissioner to hold that title longer was Pete Rozelle (1960-1989).
