Breaking: Bill Belichick Makes 1 Surprising Decision At Quarterback For New England Patriots (NFL News)

Bill Belichick has made a critical decision at the quarterback position for the New England Patriots this season. Belichick has been mum about whether Mac Jones or Bailey Zappe will win the QB1 job for the Patriots this year. The six-time Super Bowl-winning coach wants Zappe and Jones to compete for the job.

Belichick’s words and actions during training camp came after reports this spring and summer of friction between Belichick, Jones, and owner Robert Kraft. Belichick and Jones said at the beginning of camp that their relationship was good.

We still don’t know who the starter will be. But Belichick made another major decision for the quarterback room Monday. According to Tom Pelissero with the NFL Network, the Patriots released Trace McSorley.

That leaves the Patriots with Jones, Zappe, and rookie UDFA Malik Cunningham on the quarterback roster. Cunningham went 3/6 passing in the preseason for 19 yards. That beat McSorley’s preseason performance, where the experienced NFL quarterback went 1/4 passing for four yards.

The Patriots are taking a gamble that they will have more of a chance to retain the veteran McSorley on the practice squad than Cunningham after waivers. Belichick is choosing to go with a sure young quarterback room rather than assuring the Patriots keep a veteran in the mix of an offense with plenty of questions at the QB1 position.
