Perhaps the NFL’s greatest coach Bill Belichick will not be on the sideline for this season as he will be working in the media this year with hopes to return to coaching in 2025. However, Belichick was offered quite the amazing opportunity, but ‘politely’ declined the offer.
Kyle Shanahan Reveals He Offered Bill Belichick A Job
The San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed this week that he did indeed offer the legend a job for this year. He reportedly and legitimately offered Belichick and single job on his coaching staff that he wanted. The position that would have made the most sense would have been defensive coordinator.
It was reported that Bill politely declined the offer as it’s obvious that Bill would only ever be a head coach in the NFL now. It is not surprising that Bill would turn down the job, but if he did decide to team up with Shanahan that would probably be the best coaching staff of all time.
Bill has been a head coach for decades now, so it would be shocking for him to go down a level to defensive coordinator at this age and time in his career. However, it would be incredible for fans to have seen something like that, and they would have for sure been the favorites to take home the Super Bowl.
NFL Fans React To Bill Belichick Turning Down Coaching Job
Belichick seems to only have his eyes set on a head coaching position for 2025, and has no issue with sitting for a year to wait for the right opportunity. There will undoubtedly be numerous teams that will be searching for a coach nest season, and Bill may be at the top of the list for some very solid rosters in 2025.
This hasn’t stopped fans from dreaming about a Shanahan and Belichick team up. Fans are upset that Bill did not take the job as it would have made for an incredibly entertaining story line for the season:
“That defense under Bill would’ve carried them all the way to a Lombardi,” one user declared.
“Would’ve been the greatest defense in NFL history,” wrote another.
“Bill wants to be a head coach and nothing else this really isn’t all that surprising,” a third pointed out.
While we will never know how the 49ers defense would look with Belichick, we will probably get to see a Belichick coached defense in 2025 and beyond, as Bill has his eyes set on the most wins of any head coach of all time.
While we could easily assume that Bill would have got the 49ers to the promise land, I guess we will never know.
