The San Francisco 49ers remain the class of the NFC, a title they have held since their first of two Super Bowl appearances in 2019. San Francisco has won double-digit games three times during that span, with the common denominator being head coach Kyle Shanahan. Despite earning his fair share of criticism for his shortcomings in the postseason, Shanahan has become one of the best coaches and roster builders in the NFL. Shanahan almost earned another notch in his coaching belt this offseason, nearly inking one of the game’s greatest head coaches to become the team’s next defensive coordinator.
According to NFL insider Ari Meirov, Shanahan offered former New England Patriots bench boss Bill Belichick the team’s defensive coordinator position this offseason. Belichick and the Patriots mutually parted ways this offseason after 24 seasons. During that stretch, he compiled a 266-121 record but failed to land a head coaching gig this summer.
San Francisco 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan: Approached Bill Belichick with Coaching Opportunity
In a not-so-distant alternative universe, NFL legend Bill Belichick would be the defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers. On Tuesdays, reports surfaced that San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan offered Belichick a coaching position this offseason after the latter failed to land a head coaching gig. Via The TK Show with Tim Kawakami, Shanahan said he was left “shocked” when Belichick did not receive a head coaching offer this offseason. “I know what I would do if I was an owner, so that shocks me. … He’s the best, and I like talking to him,” said Shanahan.
When asked about offering Belichick a position with the 49ers, Shanahan said, “I did. I threw it out to him. He loves football so much that you never know what he… I can’t believe he’s not a head coach of a team right now… But I know he just loves ball in its simplest form, so I threw it all out to him, whatever he wanted to do, including defensive coordinator. I was like, ‘Would you be interested?’ And he was very nice and appreciative and politely turned me down.”
Bill Belichick: Potentially Out of Football in 2024
Barring a surprise, Bill Belichick will not patrol an NFL sideline next fall. Belichick spent the past 24 seasons leading the New England Patriots, highlighted by six Super Bowl victories. Belichick is a member of the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team, NFL 2010s All-Decade Team, NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team, a three-time AP NFL Coach of the Year, and holds the record for most Super Bowl wins with eight.
More importantly, New England went 30-12 in the postseason with Belichick, earning a trip to the Super Bowl nine times. In Belichick’s 24 seasons with the Patriots, the AFC East squad only failed to post a winning record four times.
