The Dallas Cowboys were named as a logical beneficiary to the surplus of talent the New York Jets have accumulated on offense in the wake of trading for Aaron Rodgers this offseason. The Jets have added many skilled players on offense.
The Jets’ latest star acquisition, running back Dalvin Cook, has added extra names to the skilled players list on the Jets 53-man roster bubble. The Jets have until 4 p.m. Tuesday to decide which running backs make the roster and who they will have to waive.
One of those players on the bubble is Michael Carter. He’s currently third on the Jets depth chart. But he’s feeling the heat from fifth-round pick Israel Abanikanda. The Jets could decide to trade Carter for extra draft capital next April.
Proposal sends Michael Carter to the Dallas Cowboys
The Cowboys are certainly a team that is always looking to get better. They recently pulled off a deal with the San Francisco 49ers for Trey Lance in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick. The question is, would Dallas be willing to part with another Day 2 pick to bolster the running back rotation?
By all accounts, the Cowboys sound confident in Rico Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn and Malik Davis to carry the load behind Pollard. But if Dallas can acquire Carter for a meaningless seventh-round pick, it’s hard to envision them saying no.
Would the Cowboys trade with the New York Jets?
The Cowboys have a solid RB1. Deuce Vaughn has a few viral clips of his running in training camp and during the preseason. But the Cowboys could add an extra running back into the rotation for passing downs.
The 24-year-old Carter could be a solid and experienced option for the Cowboys. But I think the Cowboys shouldn’t entertain Carter for a Day 2 pick. Carter, a 2021 fourth-round pick by the Jets, should be worth a Day 3 pick.
Carter has appeared in 21 games during his first two seasons in the NFL. He has 1,041 yards rushing and seven rushing touchdowns on 261 attempts (4.0 yards per rush). Carter has been effective in the passing game and could help Dak Prescott on third downs.
Carter has 77 receptions for 613 receiving yards. He has yet to score a receiving touchdown. Pro Football Focus gave Carter a 61.3 grade for his efforts in the 2022 season.
