Legendary NFL quarterback Joe Montana has been both vocal and distant on a lot of things outside of football, but one thing that he has never been shy about admitting is that he stands firm on his political stance.
San Francisco 49ers’ legendary quarterback Joe Montana has been open about his Republican political leanings, which stand out given the predominantly left-leaning environment of his home state, California, and the fan base of the 49ers.
Montana has been a longtime donor to the Republican Party and has expressed his views on various political topics, including his stance on players kneeling during the national anthem. His political alignment reflects his personal beliefs and values, even as they contrast with the broader political landscape around him
In 2018, Montana got honest about his thoughts on players kneeling for the national anthem.
“Back when I was playing, or before, you didn’t have all the media outlets that are available to all these guys,” Montana said. “Play the game. Go do your other stuff on social media outside of that, no matter what sport it is.”
The topic back then was mainly about Colin Kaepernick, who became a free agent in 2016 but remained unsigned, with people speculating that could be due to his political stance.

However, Montana does not think so.
“If you look at a lot of the guys who come out of those read-option type systems, they have great first years,” he said. “It’s a little bit easier now maybe for those guys because they’ve taken away some of that hitting that usually takes place late in the pocket. But you have to be accurate to be in there. During those years he was struggling, he was in the low 50s and 40s in completion percentage.”
Is Joe Montana The GOAT of NFL?
The title of the NFL’s “GOAT” (Greatest of All Time) is often debated, with Joe Montana being a strong contender due to his incredible career with the San Francisco 49ers. Montana won four Super Bowl titles, earning three Super Bowl MVP awards, and was known for his clutch performances and composure under pressure.

However, many now consider Tom Brady the GOAT, given his seven Super Bowl victories and numerous NFL records. Still, Montana begs to differ.
“Well, obviously Tom has had a tremendous career. The hard part is trying to compare eras. I mean this is what, Super Bowl 56. The NFL has been around for 100 years,” Joe Montana said. “There was a guy way back, Otto Graham, who won 11 championships before there were Super Bowls. I mean the game was just so different, the ball might not have even been the same shape back then. If you watch him, it’s just had to compare guys.”
