The NFL is without a doubt the best professional sports league in America and that is completely due to the salary cap structure. Teams can’t pull what the New York Yankees do and just pay a free agent they want the entire payroll of another team as his annual salary. The cap is what makes the league interesting as teams like the Browns have gone from perennial dumpster fire to being one of the strongest teams in the NFL. The cap usually is released in December as teams try to anticipate their free agents for the next offseason but this year, the NFL will take a little bit longer.
Salary Cap Projections pushed into 2024
The news was broken by NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Sunday morning that the NFL will postpone the announcement of the salary cap until January 2024. This means that teams will have less time to plan exactly what they’ll be able to to on on the free agent market.
The NFL sent out a memorandum last week indicating that due to “open matters” between the NFL and the NFL Players Association, the projections would be pushed off until early 2024.
The Salary cap for the 2023 season is $224.8 million and the cap typically increases by approximately 5% every season. This would put the 2024 season’s salary cap around $240 million but that number won’t be set until January.
