NFL fans had strong reactions to the news that former Buffalo Bills star O.J. Simpson died from cancer at 76. The Bills selected Simpson with the No. 1 pick in the 1969 NFL Draft. Simpson would go on to be named a five-time first-team All-Pro and go on to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
O.J. Simpson had troubles after his career with the Buffalo Bills
Simpson was better as a cultural figure off the field. As Connor Downs with GH summarized:
Simpson famously dealt with an array of legal issues after his NFL career, and none more famous than his trial and controversial acquittal for the murders of his former wife, Nicole Brown, and her friend Ron Goldman.
On July 31, 2013, the Nevada Parole Board granted Simpson parole on some convictions, but his imprisonment continued based on the weapons and assault convictions. The board considered Simpson’s prior record of criminal convictions and good behavior in prison in coming to the decision.

O.J. Simpson was an abusive liar who abandoned his community long before he killed two people in cold blood. His acquittal for murder was the correct and necessary result of a racist criminal legal system. But he’s still a monster, not a martyr.
