NFL Draft news: More than a few mock drafts out there have Drake Maye going No. 3 overall to the New England Patriots. The former North Carolina standout is without a doubt one of the top prospects in his class, which is why most folks believe that the Pats would not be wasting their third pick on the highly-touted 21-year-old.
As it turns out, Maye himself has already been dreaming about potentially following in the footsteps of New England legend Tom Brady.
NFL Draft: Gronk Endorses Drake Maye
One former Brady teammate has already given his endorsement for Maye. In a recent interview, Rob Gronkowski argued that wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. would be a great pick for New England. Gronk noted, however, that this is under the premise that Maye or Caleb Williams were already unavailable:
“They can’t outkick their coverage on this pick. I mean, this is their highest draft pick in quite some time, …” Gronkowski said (h/t Harrison Reno of SI). “But I think if they don’t go with a quarterback, Drake Maye or Caleb Williams has already [been] taken off the board. I think a for sure pick, a for sure lock that won’t be a bust … is Marvin Harrison Jr., at the wide receiver position.”
Maye clearly has a fan in the four-time All-Pro tight end, who himself is quite an icon among the Patriots faithful.
Drake Maye Wants to Follow in GOAT’s Footsteps
Talking about the Patriots, Maye declared in a recent podcast appearance that New England would be one of the places he would love to play in:
“So, just a place that’s had a lot of success and had some years lately that they haven’t been as successful and looking to get back on track and I know that’s, you know, right there near Boston,” he said (h/t Jay Postrado of ClutchPoints). “These are three great sports towns you’re talking about now. So, all great places to play and I think a great spot to be a franchise quarterback at, and that’s what I’m working towards.”
Maye isn’t shying away from the big shoes he will potentially have to fill if he becomes the Pats’ new cornerstone quarterback. The young stud is well aware of the fact that being drafted by New England will come with some gargantuan expectations:
“New England, I mean, it’s hard not to talk about the dynasty, you know, you think of the GOAT,” Maye said. “That’s what you think of when you think of New England, you think of the GOAT, Tom Brady.
We shall find out soon enough if Maye will get the opportunity to follow in the great Tom Brady’s footsteps.
