The NFL world has been taken by storm by Kansas City Chief’s kicker Harrison Butker, and the speech he made at Benedictine College. Butker has been heavily criticized about his comments that he made during his commencement speech, and everyone has given their opinions on it by now.
Now, an NFL coach revealed had to weigh in on the speech and what he told his players following all this drama with Butker.
Miami Dolphins Mike McDaniel Issued Warning To Players
On his Wednesday media availability, Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was asked about the speech. McDaniel was very realistic about the situation, and had quite a few insightful things to say about the whole ordeal. Specifically, that players do have to be careful about what they say in the modern day, as it can stick with their name forever.
McDaniel just wants players to speak on something if they really believe it, as the consequences of what you are say are real.
“I think you do have to open the eyes of the players to their platform if they’re new to the situation,” McDaniel said. “I think you have to understand that what you say publicly can be fragmented and last with you forever.
“I really emphasize that whatever you’re going to say, you better believe it. You just try to educate people to understand the consequences of whatever they do. They have the freedom of choice, and if they want to go that direction, go right ahead.”
The Dolphins head coach is right on the money, as players have now been empowered to have the freedom to say what they want. If they truly believe something they have the freedom to say it, but a player should also be careful, as people are also free to heavily criticize what a player says.
This was a very fair response from McDaniel, as he highlights why he is one of the most beloved coaches in the game today.
Butker, on the other hand will certainly face tons of questions about his speech when he makes his media appearances that are certain to come. Butker is certainly entitled to share his views with the world, and people are free to disagree, but it does seem that this whole story has been taken a bit too far. The Chiefs are certainly hoping it goes away soon.
