The New York Jets have been in the news due to the fact that defensive back Tae Hayes was arrested during the weekend by the Trinity Police Department in Morgan County, Alabama for marijuana possession. However, the story of his Jets’ tenure will end here as Adam Schefter is reporting that the Jets have officially released Hayes on Monday afternoon.
The 26-year-old defensive back from Appalachian State has struggled to find a consistent home throughout his NFL career as in four seasons, he has donned six different jerseys (Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers, New England Patriots, New York Jets). He appeared in one game with the Jets in 2023 and finished with two solo tackles.
While this move is not going to move the needle in any way for the New York Jets going forward, it will be interesting to see if another team will pick him ahead of the beginning of training camp as he is now part of a loaded NFL free agency class still looking for an opportunity.
What should people expect out of the 2024 New York Jets?
The New York Jets have been focused on the 2024 season as their window to win is right now. With Aaron Rodgers returning from a torn Achilles tendon just four snaps into his Jets’ tenure, the team bolstered their offense with the likes of left tackle Tyron Smith, wide receiver Mike Williams and backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor.
They also made some big moves on the defensive side of the field with the additions of defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw and defensive end Haason Reddick to bolster the defense as well. According to DraftKings Sportsbook, the Jets have the 11th-best odds to win the Super Bowl (+2000).
With a tough opening to the schedule and an older roster, it will be interesting to see how they do. The beginning of the season is going to be one of the biggest in recent memory.
