For over a year now, the New York Jets have been rumored to be interested in acquiring Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams. The reason for this is obvious: Adams enjoyed immense levels of success when playing with current Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers during their days together with the Green Bay Packers.
Adams was traded to the Raiders a year before Green Bay sent Rodgers to the Jets. Ever since the four-time NFL MVP landed in New York, many have wondered when or if the two would reunite, especially since Las Vegas got rid of quarterback Derek Carr, who was a major factor in the three-time All-Pro wide receiver choosing Las Vegas as his preferred destination.
Now Adams is on the trading block after informing the Raiders that he would like to be moved following a dramatic week involving head coach Antonio Pierce and cryptic social media activity.
Of course, the Jets are on the top of his list of teams that he would like to be traded to, but he does reportedly have one major concern about Rodgers.
Davante Adams Is Not Sure How Long Aaron Rodgers Plans to Play for the New York Jets
In a recent report published by The Athletic, NFL insider Dianna Russini reported that Adams does have one major concern about a possible trade to the Jets: the longevity of Rodgers with the organization. While the future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback is under contract for next season, there are questions as to whether the Jets will choose to keep him if they do not make a long playoff run.
Rodgers will also be 41 in December, and may not want to play anymore after this year if he feels his body cannot take another year in the NFL.
“While Adams would like to be reunited with his former QB, I was told he has some concerns about Rodgers’ plans to stay in New York past this season. Adams doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his current deal, so he has no choice in where he lands. It’s all about the best deal for the Raiders, who are looking for a future second-round pick. However, the sense around the league is Las Vegas will probably get a third-rounder when the trade is complete.”
Adams himself has two more years left on his contract after 2024 but has no more guaranteed money left on his deal beyond this year. He carries a $44 million cap hit next year, but a $15 million dead cap hit. In other words, his future with whatever team that acquires him will also be uncertain.
Davante Adams Left the Green Bay Packers for a Similar Reason
As mentioned previously, Adams was traded by the Packers a year before they sent Rodgers to New York. Adams’ contract with the Packers expired following the 2021 NFL season and the team decided to place the franchise tag on him.
Knowing that Rodgers was likely not going to play in Green Bay much longer, Adams requested to be traded instead of negotiating a long-term deal to stay after Jordan Love took over as the starting quarterback.
Now, with the prospect of possibly reuniting with Rodgers, the Pro Bowl wide receiver is facing a similar dilemma. Does he want to try to win a title with his long-time teammate or will he try to go to a team with a long-term solution at quarterback?
As Russini notes, though, Adams does not have a no-trade clause in his contract. Las Vegas can trade him anywhere they want.
Whether or not New York meets their asking price remains to be seen.
