Most people wrote Aaron Rodgers off after he missed a lot of time last season due to an injury. Now, the New York Jets quarterback is proving everyone wrong, especially after being named one of the contenders for Comeback Player of the Year by ESPN.
As the 2024 NFL season progresses, the race for the Comeback Player of the Year is heating up, with Aaron Rodgers and Sam Darnold emerging as top contenders.
According to the latest odds from DraftKings, Rodgers leads the pack at +140, following a challenging season where he ruptured his Achilles just four snaps into the opener last year. Now healthy, he has thrown for 849 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception over the first four games, helping the New York Jets to a 2-2 record.
Not far behind is Sam Darnold, who has made a remarkable resurgence with the Minnesota Vikings. With a perfect 4-0 record as a starter, the QB has demonstrated impressive form, throwing for 932 yards and leading the league with 11 touchdown passes. His current passer rating of 118.9 places him at the top of the NFL stats.
ESPN’s Bill Barnwell Places New York Jets’ Aaron Rodgers Among Contenders for Comeback Player of the Year
Similar to DraftKings’ take, ESPN has also placed Rodgers as one of the contenders for Comeback Player of the Year. This can be seen in Bill Barnwell’s NFL analysis on the matter.
“It has been an up-and-down start to the season for Rodgers, who struggled through an ugly loss to the Broncos and battled coach Robert Saleh over his penchant for inspiring free plays (and false starts) with his cadence.
Physically, Rodgers’ arm looks sound, and his interception rate is unsurprisingly low, but he has posted a completion percentage over expected (CPOE) of minus-4.4% and is averaging just 6.6 yards per attempt, both of which come in below average,” Barnwell wrote.
Other notable players in the running include Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals at +750 and Kirk Cousins, who is now with the Falcons, alongside Kyler Murray and Damar Hamlin, all sitting at +1000. Each of these players has their own unique comeback story, adding intrigue to the award.
Darnold’s performance has sparked conversations about his potential, especially after a rocky start to his career. As the season unfolds, both he and Rodgers will be looking to solidify their cases for the award, making the competition one to watch closely.
