ESPN Analyst Makes Interesting Early Pick for NFL Coach of the Year

Even at this point in the season, there have been quite a number of surprises already, such as the emergence of Washington Commanders’ Jayden Daniels as one of the best quarterbacks. According to an NFL analysis by ESPN, though, one of those surprises is how Minnesota Vikings’ Kevin O’Connell is leading the race to win Coach of the Year.

O’Connell has emerged as a transformative leader, guiding his team to a stellar 4-0 start in the 2024 season. Drawing from his experiences with the Los Angeles Rams, particularly during their Super Bowl run, O’Connell emphasizes the importance of adaptability and simplicity in his offensive strategies.

His coaching philosophy centers around making complex concepts accessible for players. O’Connell employs a layered approach, explaining not just the how but also the why behind plays, allowing players to understand the reasoning that dictates their actions on the field. This method fosters a collaborative environment where players feel empowered to suggest modifications that suit their strengths.

O’Connell’s ability to pivot in-game has been crucial, especially when faced with unexpected challenges. This season, he has effectively managed quarterback Sam Darnold, who has thrived under his guidance, demonstrating improved performance and confidence. Darnold’s success, including a standout game against the San Francisco 49ers, showcases O’Connell’s knack for delivering tailored support and game plans that resonate with his players.

As it stands, O’Connell is leading the pack when it comes to the NFL’s best coaches. This can be seen in an analysis done by Bill Barnwell for ESPN.

“While I’d also consider Brian Flores a candidate for Coordinator of the Year if I were handing out that award, O’Connell’s work in building an oft-dominant offense with Sam Darnold at quarterback has been excellent. The Vikings lead the league in EPA per play on offense in situations in which each team has at least a 5% chance of winning. In other words, stripping out garbage time, they’ve actually been a slightly better offense than the Commanders on a snap-by-snap basis. Their offense has been the second worst in the league in those long shot situations.

Watching Darnold play over these first four weeks, I don’t see a great quarterback. What I do see is a physically gifted passer who has better answers to the questions that have flummoxed him in the past, partly because of his teammates and partly because of a scheme that routinely creates favorable looks and matchups for him. It’s the little things, such as moving linebackers with motion to create open spaces for Justin Jefferson near the goal line, increasing Darnold’s margin for error in the process,” Barnwell wrote.

The foundation of O’Connell’s approach lies in building strong relationships and maintaining open lines of communication. He actively seeks feedback and adapts to players’ needs, making them feel integral to the offensive game plan. This strategy not only enhances individual performance but also cultivates a cohesive team dynamic.

As the Vikings continue their season, O’Connell’s leadership style will be instrumental in navigating the inevitable challenges ahead, reinforcing his reputation as a forward-thinking coach in the NFL.
