The New York Jets made the fairly popular decision (among their fanbase) to move on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers this offseason. After two seasons, one of which he spent out with a torn Achilles, it was more than clear that the four-time NFL MVP was not the savior New York expected when they acquired him in a trade with the Green Bay Packers.

    He was far from it.

After missing the 2023 season with that aforementioned Achilles injury, Rodgers came back in 2024 with hopes of contending for a Super Bowl. However, the Jets went 5-12, fired their head coach and general manager, and were further from contention with him than they were without him.

New head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey decided that, for now, the quarterback who gives them the best chance of being competitive in 2025 is former Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields.

Earlier this week, it was reported that New York and Fields agreed to a two-year $40 million contract, ensuring that he will be the Jets’ starter for at least one season.

Fields was 4-2 as the starter for the Steelers in 2024, completing 65.8% of his passes for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, one interception, and a passer rating of 110.6. However, Pittsburgh benched him in favor of Russell Wilson after the former Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos star was healthy enough to play.

Ironically, the Steelers are one of the teams that have expressed interest in signing Rodgers this offseason. However, the four-time NFL MVP has a different team in mind.

According to a recent report by The Athletic, Rodgers has drawn interest from two different NFL teams: the Steelers and New York Giants. However, he is apparently wanting to return to the NFC North with one of his old rivals:

“Rodgers is hoping to sign with the Vikings, who went 14-3 in 2024 before suffering a first-round playoff defeat to the Los Angeles Rams. Meanwhile, the Vikings have been strongly weighing the possibility of pursuing Rodgers as a replacement for 2024 starter Sam Darnold, who signed a three-year, $100 million free-agent deal Wednesday with the Seattle Seahawks.

“Rodgers has been targeted by the Steelers and Giants but has essentially put both teams on hold while he waits for clarity regarding the Vikings’ situation. If Minnesota ceases to be an option, it’s also possible that Rodgers will turn down both the Steelers (a 2024 playoff team) and Giants and instead opt for retirement.”

This would, of course, be ironic as Rodgers would be following a similar career path as that of Brett Favre, who spent 15 years as the starter for the Green Bay Packers before being traded to the Jets, and then signing as a free agent with the Minnesota Vikings.

It is easy to see why Rodgers would want to play for Minnesota, though. His history with Green Bay aside, the Vikings were 14-3 last season and, at least on paper, give him the best chance of winning a second Super Bowl.
