New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley is headed out of MetLife Stadium as the ongoing saga of his future with the team gains a major update.
The Penn State product is one of the biggest question marks for the Giants ahead of the 2024 offseason. While he’s a productive running back when healthy, his career trajectory has swerved away from the team’s timeline, and their decision as the franchise tag window opens has cleared the road for the running back’s future plans.
RUMOR: New York Giants will not use tag on Saquon Barkley, will let him test free agency
Giants GM Joe Schoen has a tough decision when it comes to Barkley as he’s already applied the tag to the running back the previous offseason. After a disappointing campaign for the Giants, the temperature around the organization is that they’ll be looking for a new running back.
New York Daily News’ Pat Leonard argued that it’s time for the team to use the cap that would be affected by Barkley’s franchise tag to improve the team.
They should let Barkley become a free agent on March 13. They should let Barkley try to be someone else’s Christian McCaffrey since they don’t believe he can be that for them.
Parting ways would make sense for both the player and the team.
Letting Barkley hit free agency would do right by someone who did right by the Giants last season when he didn’t have to. It would let him find his true value on the open market before it depreciates for good due to his age, 27, and mileage.
Just as importantly, it would give Barkley a chance to win.
Saquon Barkley has done enough in 2023 to attract serious attention from teams in need of a solid contributor on the run game. He finished 2023 with 962 rushing yards and 6 TDs while only playing 14 games.
If Barkley is hitting the free agency for the first time in his career, it will be interesting to see where he will land. It’s also intriguing to see where the Giants will use the money they will save from not tagging him.
