The New York Giants offense is going to look drastically different this season.
Saquon Barkley, the Giants’ bellcow and face of the franchise since being chosen with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft will now be taking handoffs and catching passes from Jalen Hurts as one of the Philadelphia Eagles’ primary weapons, with New York turning to a backfield by committee approach to replacing his production.
Last season, during the final year of his contract with the Giants, Barkley rushed for 962 yards and six touchdowns, while adding 41 receptions for another 280 yards and four more scores.
There’s a reason Barkley is generating preseason MVP buzz given that he’ll now have the luxury of lining up behind the Eagles’ dominant offensive line, and question marks now surround the Giants’ ground attack in 2024.
Devin Singletary Confident in Replacing Saquon Barkley for Giants
When the Giants kickoff the regular season against the Minnesota Vikings at MetLife Stadium, it will be Devin Singletary alongside Daniel Jones in the backfield in the Swamps of Jersey.
Singletary needed just two words to attempt to assuage any concerns about how the offense will survive and thrive without Barkley.
“Stay tuned,” Singletary told Tyler Dunne of Go Long.
At 26 years old, Singletary arrives in New York having played in six playoff games through his first five seasons with the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans, two fewer postseason contests than the Giants have played since 2008.
Beyond big-game experience, Singletary boasts 4,049 rushing yards with 20 touchdowns and is a capable receiving option out of the backfield with 175 career catches for 1,164 yards and four touchdowns .
“I’m coming to show you week-in and week-out how I put it on the line for my guys on the left and right of me,” Singletary told Dunne. “I’m going to just go all out every time. You’re going to get the most out of me every time. They’ll find out soon enough.”
So, too, will the Giants if the offseason makeover of the offense, and moving on from Barkley will turn out to be a prudent financial decision or one that further hamstrings one of the league’s most inconsistent offenses.
