Even though the New York Giants didn’t really make much of an impact last season, they can still move forward in the right direction in the upcoming campaign. Surprisingly, retaining Darius Slayton and his $12 million contract is one of the right steps the team must take.
Before the previous season, the Giants finished with a 9-7 record. Just a few months ago, the team fared poorer by finishing third in the NFC East division with a 6-11 record.
New York’s elimination from playoff contention occurred last Christmas Day in a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. This happened after the Giants spiraled out of control due to quarterback Daniel Jones going down because of a torn ACL and an offensive line that couldn’t keep up with the rest of the league.
Next season, the Giants will have to make certain moves to even reach the playoffs. One of those is keeping Slayton within the roster as free agency looms over the offseason.
Why The New York Giants Need To Retain Darius Slayon For Next Season
While it may come as a surprise to many due to Slayton not being one of the best receivers in the league, there are pretty good reasons behind this proposal. Aaron Schatz explains more in his article for ESPN:
“However, Slayton has put up strong advanced metrics for the past two seasons. He ranked 26th in DVOA among qualified wide receivers in 2023, the only Giants wide receiver with a positive rating. In 2022, he was even better, 16th in DVOA among qualified wide receivers. Yet Slayton’s standard stat totals are not so impressive because of the poor offense around him.
This year, he had 770 yards and only four touchdowns. In 2022, he had 724 yards and only two touchdowns. The disconnect between Slayton’s real value and the public perception might allow the Giants to extend him for a low price. Slayton would be an excellent No. 2 field-stretcher if New York could ever find a No. 1 wide receiver. A Slayton extension this offseason would also save the Giants $3.5 million on the salary cap,” Schatz wrote.
It seems that retaining Slayton will be more beneficial for the Giants in the long run. Apart from this proposal, expect the team to be busy in the offseason in a bid to be more relevant in the coming months.
