The New York Giants played against their divisional rival, the Washington Commanders, for their first road game of the regular season. The Giants lost 18-21 as Commanders kicker Austin Seibert made a game-winning 30-yard field goal to ice the game. The Giants became the second team in NFL history to score three touchdowns, allow zero touchdowns, and lose the game. The last time a team accomplished this feat was in 1989 when the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Los Angeles Rams 23-21.
Part of the reason why the Giants lost was because their kicker suffered an injury.
The New York Giants kicker suffered an injury on the opening kickoff
Graham Gano popped up on the injury report on Saturday with a groin injury. Despite being added to the injury report, the Giants opted against elevating Jude McAtamney for gameday. Gano pulled his hamstring on the opening kickoff while chasing down Austin Ekeler, who returned it for a 98-yard touchdown but was called back because of a penalty. He missed the rest of the game.
Jamie Gillan missed his first PAT attempt, and the Giants went for two twice but failed both times.
The New York Giants Pro Bowler will miss some time
Brian Daboll told reporters on Monday that Graham Gano will miss a few weeks. “He has a hamstring, so we’ll see where he’s at and I would assume it’s going to be a few weeks here,” Daboll said Monday.
There is a possibility the Giants elevate undrafted rookie Jude McAtamney from the practice squad to the active roster for the next few weeks. However, they worked out a few kickers.
The New York Giants worked out four kickers on Monday
- Randy Bullock: Appeared in six games with the Giants in 2023.
- Riley Patterson: Appeared in two games with the Browns and 13 with the Lions in 2023.
- Zane Gonzalez: He hasn’t played a game since 2021.
- Tanner Brown: He hasn’t played a game in his first two seasons.
