New York Giants quarterback Drew Lock had a Week 1 preseason game he is going to want to forget about. He only completed 4-of-10 passes for 17 yards and an interception. Lock threw his interception in the first quarter.
Later in the first quarter, Lock suffered a hip injury and he did not return to the game. It doesn’t appear to be a serious injury for him in the long term. Tommy DeVito played the rest of the game at quarterback and he performed better than Lock did.
There were New York Giants fans who think that DeVito should be the backup quarterback to Daniel Jones over Drew Lock. It will depend on what happens during the final two preseason games for the Giants in how that will go.
New York Giants Quarterback Drew Lock Receives Low Grade From Pro Football Focus
Pro Football Focus listed grades for each player in the preseason game between the Detroit Lions and the New York Giants. Some players received higher grades than others. It was no surprise that he did not receive a very good grade from them. His score was a 30.0 from Pro Football Focus in the game against Detroit.
It is not a very good look for him that he received a very poor grade from them. A season ago, Lock was the backup quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks. The former second-round draft pick was never going to be the starting quarterback ahead of Geno Smith unless he got hurt.
One of the reasons why Lock was signed with the Giants is because he thought he had a shot to be the starting quarterback ahead of Daniel Jones this season. However, those dreams feel like a total pipe dream now. On Friday, many question if Lock will even be the second quarterback behind him. Tommy DeVito received a 66.3 score from Pro Football Focus against the Detroit Lions.
DeVito looked much better than Lock did. Maybe it has something to do with him knowing Brian Daboll’s offense already, but there is a reason why Drew Lock has been a backup quarterback his entire career.
The reason why the New York Giants won the game 14-3 against the Detroit Lions in the preseason was because of the ground game between Eric Gray and Tyrone Tracy Jr. Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus said:
“Gray’s 48-yard touchdown scamper was the longest play of any offensive player across either Thursday night game, while his 4.60 yards per route run was the highest figure of any player to see three or more targets in the Lions-Giants contest. Tracy’s raw rushing numbers look modest, but he forced four missed tackles from just five carries, which will have Giants fans excited about his potential in this offense.”
The offense moved the football better with Tommy DeVito behind center than Lock. The Giants will have a decision to make for the backup quarterback position if he is either out for a lengthy period or continues to play poorly also.
