The New York Giants are at a crossroads. They own the sixth overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft while entering the second year of quarterback Daniel Jones’ lucrative contract. However, the four-year, $160-million contract gifted to Jones is frontloaded across the first two seasons, offering an out for the team after the 2024 season. New York could burn their precious first-round pick on a quarterback, compensate him under the rookie pay scale, and part with Jones at the end of the year.
The Giants could also take one of the two top pass-catchers in the NFL draft, Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. or LSU’s Malik Nabers. On Monday, their current starting signal-caller, Daniel Jones, talked to the media, emphasizing his plans to be full-go come training camp, potentially making the Giants’ draft plans clearer.
New York Giants QB Daniel Jones: Talks to Media
Former first-round pick and New York Giants starting quarterback Daniel Jones spoke to the media on Monday as he continues to work his way back from a torn ACL he suffered last year. Jones spoke highly of the team’s training staff when pressed about his rehab.
“Rehab is going well, making good progress and coming along. Obviously, I spent a lot of time with the trainers here and feel like things are going well. I’m coming along well,” said Jones when asked about his rehab progress. Jones suffered a torn ACL in early November of the 2023 season.
When asked about a target date, the New York gunslinger said, “The plan is to be ready to go by training camp, so that’s what I’m shooting for. I feel good about being ready.”
Jones had surgery to repair his torn ACL in late November of 2023. He finished the season 1-5 as the starter, throwing for 909 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions. He completed 68% of his passes. However, the Duke product played well in 2022, throwing 15 touchdowns against five picks.
New York Giants: Could Still Draft QB in First Round
Despite Daniel Jones’s recent health update, the New York Giants could still select a quarterback with the sixth overall pick. At his best, Jones is a capable game manager who can use his legs. However, his recent struggles, injury history, and a deep class of quarterbacks could allow Brian Daboll’s squad to find their next franchise cornerstone.
Former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Caleb Williams is undoubtedly the first overall pick for the Chicago Bears. Still, North Carolina signal-caller Drake Maye, LSU’s Jayden Daniels, and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy could be in play with the sixth overall selection. Daniels posted the best college numbers, winning the Heisman last season, while McCarthy helped lead Michigan to a championship. Meanwhile, many pundits consider Maye as the second-best quarterback.
