The New York Giants need a wide receiver in the 2024 NFL Draft and the latest Bleacher Report mock draft has them taking wide receiver Rome Odunze from Washington. Odunze is one of the three best wide receivers in this draft class with Marvin Harrison Jr. from Ohio State and Malik Nabers of LSU.
Odunze last season with the Washington Huskies caught 92 passes for 1,640 yards receiving and 13 touchdowns, along with averaging 17.8 yards per catch. Rome Odunze also was used very little last season in the run game, but had 37 yards rushing on two carries and a touchdown and averaged 18.5 yards per rush. He is 6’3″ and weighs 215 lbs and is forgoing his senior season with the Washington Huskies.
Some of the reasoning that the Bleacher Report Scouting Department gave about the Giants drafting Odunze sixth overall in the 2024 NFL Draft by saying:
“If the New York Giants have a choice between LSU’s Malik Nabers and Washington’s Rome Odunze, the decision may not be an easy one. Generally speaking, Odunze isn’t viewed as WR2, though he does hold a slight edge for that spot on the B/R draft board. This pairing is based primarily on fit. The days of Darius Slayton leading the Giants with fewer than 800 receiving yards should be done. Odunze is a 6’3″, 212-pound target with 4.45-second 40-yard dash speed while also being the highest-graded player on contested catches last season, according to Pro Football Focus. The combination can be deadly while finally giving quarterback Daniel Jones a consistent threat on the outside.”
The thing is, who knows if Daniel Jones will be the starting quarterback for the New York Giants next season. It could be Drew Lock or a rookie they draft. However, they do need to draft a playmaker in the worst way.
The New York Giants Drafting Rome Odunze Would Be a Good Choice But It Would Feel Hard To Pass on Malik Nabers or Marvin Harrison Jr.
There would be a lot of Giants fans happy with taking one of the top three wide receivers in the first round. The only way that Odunze is a sure selection with the sixth pick is if Drake Maye, Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Malik Nabers, and Marvin Harrison Jr. are all off the board.
But if J.J. McCarthy is also selected before then and if Harrison Jr. or Nabers is still on the board at six along with Odunze, Nabers or Harrison Jr. are the better prospects than Odunze. However, there is no doubt that Rome Odunze would be the best wide receiver in the New York Giants wide receiver room right away.
He is better than Darius Slayton, Wan’Dale Robinson, Isaiah Hodgins, and Jalin Hyatt right off the bat. The home-run hitter and physical wide receiver is what the Giants are missing in this offense.
