The Saints fired longtime offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. following the conclusion of the 2023 season. Carmichael held offensive play-calling duties with the Saints since 2009, winning the Super Bowl during his first season. He will rejoin longtime New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton in Denver for the 2024 campaign.
Klint Kubiak: Eyeing OC Position
Kubiak, the son of former Houston Texans and Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak played safety at Colorado State from 2005 to 2009. He started his coaching career immediately after the conclusion of his time with CSU, landing an offensive quality control position at Texas A&M. He spent three seasons with Aggies, including working with Kliff Kingsbury and Heisman Trophy Award-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel in 2012. Kubiak left Texas A&M for the Minnesota Vikings in 2013, working with Bill Musgrave and Norv Turner over two seasons. After a short stint back in college with the Kansas Jayhawks, Kubiak joined his father with the Denver Broncos. He spent three seasons as an offensive assistant before returning to the Vikings.
The younger Kubiak, Klint worked with the quarterbacks from 2019 to 2020 before becoming the offensive coordinator in 2021. The Vikings finished the season scoring 25.0 points per game, the 14th-best mark in the NFL. Quarterback Kirk Cousins threw for 4,221 yards and 33 touchdowns against seven picks. Meanwhile, star back Dalvin Cook ran 249 times for 1,159 yards and six scores. Kubiak returned to the Broncos for the following season, including earning play-calling duties amid the team’s offensive struggles.
He has spent this season as the San Francisco 49ers passing game coordinator, with the team set to take on the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Quarterback Brock Purdy led the league touchdown percentage, yards per attempt, rating, and yards per completion during the regular season.
New Orleans Saints: Needing Bounceback Season in 2024
The Saints finished the season 9-8, missing out on the playoff despite acquiring quarterback Derek Carr. The gunslinger battled through multiple injuries but appeared in all 17 games, throwing for 3,878 yards, 25 touchdowns, and eight picks. The Saints finished in the top half of the league in passing yards, touchdowns, and net yards per attempt. However, they averaged just 3.6 yards per rush attempt, the second-worst mark in the NFL.
Meanwhile, the defense played great, allowing just 19.2 points per game. The Saints held a top-ten offense and defense regarding points but failed to qualify for the postseason. Instead, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the NFC South.
