The New England Patriots are entering a new era of football during the 2024 NFL season. Gone are the days of legendary head coach Bill Belichick patrolling the sidelines. Jerod Mayo is the new head coach in town and is hoping to lead the Patriots back to Super Bowl contention.
A lot of that success will rely on rookie quarterback Drake Maye. After being selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Patriots need him to develop into a true franchise quarterback.
Mayo, however, will need to find ways to put his players in successful positions. Belichick struggled to develop Mac Jones and that cannot happen with Maye.
Rob Gronkowski, one of the biggest recent New England Patriots legends, spoke out about the new head coach and made a shocking comparison for him.
New England Patriots Legend Rob Gronkowksi Reveals Huge Comparison For Jerod Mayo
Speaking recently on former New England Patriots star wide receiver Julian Edelman’s podcast, “Games With Names,” Gronkowski actually suggested some Tom Brady comparisons when talking about Mayo.
“Jerod Mayo was just a phenomenon on the football field with lining everyone up, and then also in the meeting rooms as well. He knew where every player needed to be during any situation that occurred on the defensive side of the ball… He was always alert, and you can always tell that was going to translate into the next phase of his life. Huge shout out to Jerod Mayo just showing his coaching abilities even when he was playing… Jerod Mayo was the Tom Brady on the defensive side of the ball getting everyone lined up.”
Brady was one of the most cerebral players that the NFL has ever seen. He was always using his IQ to beat opposing teams.
If Mayo can do anything close to that from a coaching perspective, he will follow in Belichick’s footsteps from a success perspective. He simply will bring a different style of coaching to the field.
Getting an endorsement like Gronkowski is a big deal. It should give New England Patriots fans more confidence in the team’s decision to move on from Belichick.
Hopefully, the Patriots and fans will see the change make a difference on the field. New England has been depressing to watch over the last couple of years.
With Mayo now leading the way, at the very least fans will see a brand new approach to the game.
