The New England Patriots are having their worst season under Bill Belichick in 20 years. This has sparked many rumors about the head coaches future. No matter what happens, the Patriots are set up for quite a crazy off season.
The Patriots will have a top five pick no matter what in the draft, and at the moment they are sitting with the third pick in a draft that has many potential studs at the quarterback position. Patriot fans are dying for a new quarterback and the best they can probably get is prospect Drake Maye which many fans would enthusiastically welcome.
There have been some quarterback issues for the team this year to say the least, and it appears that with the benching of first round pick Mac Jones, the team is going to look to replace that position in the off season. Bailey Zappe took over after Mac and has not looked like a franchise guy by any means, but that isn’t stopping him from keeping a competitive mindset.
New England Patriots” Bailey Zappe Is Ready To Compete
Obviously the Patriots have a lot more issues than simply the quarterback position, which is why they are one of the worst teams in the league, fixing the quarterback position would go along way in bringing the team back.
Bailey Zappe however, isn’t concerned with the team drafting another quarterback and would welcome the competition. He was asked in his press conference about the situation and he was quoted saying:
“If that’s what they decide to do, that’s what they decide to do,” when asked how he’d feel about the team drafting another quarterback this spring. “I’m looking forward to competing against whoever comes in here for that job. I’m going to do the same thing I did last offseason, get ready to be the guy and if my name’s called I’m going to do the best thing I can to help the team win and hopefully we get after it next year.
Zappe, in proper Belichick fashion, quickly made sure to get locked back in and said:
“But I don’t want to skip over these guys that we’re playing this Sunday.”
He made sure to get back to just being focused on this week against the New York Jets, a team that they have absolutely dominated. It is great to see that Zappe is not rattled at all by the off season draft hype, but it’s interesting that he only mentioned a guy “coming in,” and he forgot to mention anything about the guys in the building.
It seems from Zappe’s perspective that he is no longer competing with Mac Jones for the position but rather would be competing on who the team brings in in the off season. Maybe he knows something we don’t, and that the team has moved on from the first round pick and is already planning to have a different starter week 1 of next season.
Mac has a tough time with the team as there has been major turnover each year, even having a defensive coordinator run the offense, and he deserves another chance else where. The fan base however, has seen enough and would welcome the Patriots taking Drake Maye or a different prospect with their top pick.
