Unlike the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens, the New England Patriots aren’t really in the mix to compete for the Super Bowl next season. As it stands, their projected record isn’t one NFL fans will not want to see.
The 2023 season marked a challenging year for the Patriots, as they faced significant struggles under former head coach Bill Belichick, who concluded his tenure with the team. The team finished the season with a disappointing record of 4–13, placing last in the AFC East for the first time since 2000. This outcome reflected the team’s difficulties, including starting the season with a 1–5 record, which was their worst start since 1995.
Despite hopes for improvement, the Patriots could not build on their previous year’s 8–9 record. Their offense struggled notably, finishing last in scoring and experiencing multiple shutouts. They failed to score 10 or more points in six games and did not reach 20 points in twelve contests, marking a dramatic decline in performance.
The team’s issues culminated in a Week 17 loss to the Buffalo Bills, sealing their fate for the postseason, as they missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year and for the third time in four seasons. Following the end of the season, Belichick and the organization mutually agreed to part ways, signifying a major change in the franchise’s direction.
New England Patriots’ Record Projection For 2024-25 NFL Season Won’t Please Fans
Unlike the Kansas City Chiefs or Baltimore Ravens in the upcoming season, the Patriots aren’t projected to finish with a good record. This can be seen in Cynthia Frelund’s analysis for the league’s official website.

I spent a lot of time evaluating off-ball linebackers this offseason, and we really don’t talk about the Patriots’ Ja’Whaun Bentley enough. He tied for second on the team with 4.5 sacks and led New England in tackles with 114 last season. He calls the signals on the field for the defense and plays all three downs. My models like him because of his burst (speed reached in first 3 yards traveled) and ability to square his hips to his target without losing speed.
The Patriots are entering a new era without Belichick, led by head coach Jerod Mayo. Despite some optimism around rookie quarterback Drake Maye, who showcased potential in preseason, Jacoby Brissett will start.
Despite the pessimistic predictions, the Patriots have a chance to defy expectations and use the doubt as motivation. The 2024 season will reveal how well they can perform, as they possess some talent but are not viewed as strong contenders. Although exceeding 4.5 wins may be challenging, the team must demonstrate their capabilities on the field to silence critics.
