The New England Patriots have once again rewarded one of their own for their play on the field. One day after extending DeVante Parker, the team announced today that they will be signing linebacker Ju’Whaun Bentley to a two-year extension.
New England Patriots Extend Ju’Whaun Bentley
Bentley was a fifth round pick and did not play much in his rookie season. However, he has worked hard and now become a legitimate defender in the NFL. He set career-high marks in tackles (125), sacks (three) last season. The extension is a two-year, $18.75 million contract with nine million being fully guaranteed. New England has had one of the better defenses in the league and are going with continuity being one of the strengths. This move is more than just an extension for a good player. It could have an impact on future moves.
Clearing Cap Space
The two extensions handed out by the Patriots have cleared up some cap space. New England has been in the running for wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins after his release from Arizona. He made a visit but no deal was signed. Many analysts believe that the price for Hopkins is rather high and teams are having trouble clearing cap space. Could these extensions mean the Patriots are gearing up for an offer? Adding Hopkins to that offense would be a great addition for Mac Jones as he looks to have a bounce back year.
Regardless of the Hopkins situation, the New England Patriots are getting a solid linebacker in Ju’Whaun Bentley. The hope is that he can continue to bring the high level play to the defense and help out the offense. The Patriots are hoping they can compete in the tough AFC East but will need a lot of things to go their way if they have a chance.
