The New England Patriots offensive line has had a disastrous start to the 2024 season and ranks last in PFF’s O-line rankings. Not only do they rank last in PFF’s rankings, but they also rank last in pass block win rate. Finally, they have allowed the 9th-most hurries, the 2nd-most QB hits, the 2nd-most pressures, and the 2nd-most sacks.
The reason for their offensive line struggles is that Eliot Wolf failed to sign big-name free agents in free agency despite having the most salary cap and, of course, injuries. Vederian Lowe has missed their last two games, Sidy Sow missed their first three, David Andrews is out for the season, and their starter is still on the physically unable-to-perform list.
The New England Patriots starting left guard is on the PUP list
Cole Strange suffered a season-ending patellar tear in Week 15 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Since his injury occurred later in the season, the Patriots placed Strange on the PUP list to start the season, and he has missed their first four games. Despite being eligible, the team will not activate this week.
However, there is optimism he will play in 2024.
The New England Patriots revealed encouraging news
A source told Mark Daniels of MassLive.com that the Patriots expect Cole Strange to return to the football field this season. Although there is no specific timetable, he could return later in the season. His recovery will ultimately determine his fate.
“According to a source, guard Cole Strange is on track to return to the Patriots this season. The former starting left guard is currently on the physically unable-to-perform list after suffering a torn patellar tendon last season,” Daniels said.
“Although his timeline is dependent on his recovery, a source said Strange is still expected to return and play for the Patriots later this season.”
Who has replaced him in the starting rotation?
Layden Robinson has replaced Cole Strange in the starting rotation. However, Robinson started at right guard in their first four games, while Michael Jordan started in Stange’s left guard spot for their first three games since Sidy Sow missed the start of 2024 with an ankle injury. Sow returned in Week 4 and got the nod at left guard.
If Sow can stay healthy, he will continue starting at left guard for the timebeing until Strange returns. Then he will likely move back to right guard.
