The New England Patriots have had a tumultuous start to their 2023 season.  After five weeks the Patriots are 1-4 and winless (0-3) at home.  After sneaking into the playoffs last year many fans had optimism surrounding the 2023 season.

That optimism has quickly subsided after the first quarter of the new season.  There has been much speculation regarding Belichick’s future in New England now that the team is underperforming.  So much so that one team has actually surfaced as a possible landing spot.

New England Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick Linked To The New York Giants Amid Tough Start To Season

According to Kenneth Teape of NFL Analysis Network:

The New England Patriots and Bill Belichick could be heading toward a divorce at the end of the season. There were rumors during the offseason that the relationship between Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick was worsening and Kraft wanted to start seeing some positive results again.

Unfortunately, those positive results have not developed. The Patriots look like arguably the worst team in the NFL, in the midst of the worst season under Bill Belichick. Reportedly, anything short of a playoff appearance would lead to a parting of the ways and at this point, New England is in a better position to land the No. 1 pick than a playoff spot.

Missing the playoffs three out of four seasons without Tom Brady and seeming to whiff on his replacement in Mac Jones would be enough to ensure most coaches are shown the door. But Bill Belichick has a long leash given his history of success, so a move in-season seems unlikely.

Alas, parting ways seems like an inevitability. Kraft has set the goal of making the postseason and the Patriots look like they are going to fall woefully short. What could be next for the future Hall of Fame head coach? Former NFL quarterback and analyst, Boomer Esiason, believes a move to the first franchise he knew, the New York Giants, could be on the table.

“What happens if the Giants end up with the No. 1 overall pick and Bill Belichick decides it is time to leave New England,” Esiason said on “Boomer & Gio.” “Now what? Caleb Williams and Bill Belichick together in New York. You don’t think Giants fans would lose their minds over that?”

The Giants were a pleasant surprise in 2022 in the first season under general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll. They wen 9-7-1 and made the playoffs but this season has been disastrous for them as well.

Would The Patriots Ever Move On From Their Legendary Head Coach?

The success of Tom Brady and the Buccanners, which included a Super Bowl victory in 2020, may have reduced Belichick’s elasticity for a transitional period. NBC Sports’ Tom Curran reports that Belichick has fluctuated in heat in the hot seat since the 2019 season.

“He’s on the hot seat. And he’s been there at different levels of warmth since 2019,” Curran said on The Rich Eisen Show.

The Patriots’ front office told Belichick that Brady would walk if Belichick offered him a two-year contract with a team option after his final year with the team. Brady wanted both years to be guaranteed. In the middle of the 2019 season, Kraft, knowing Brady’s exit was clearly coming after the 2019 season, has followed the succession plan intently.

The Mac Jones project may be on life support after what we have seen the last few years.  If the Patriots’ front office wants to go in a new direction for their franchise, could that include the head coach as well?
