The Minnesota Vikings are going to be one of the more intriguing teams to keep an eye on when the 2024 NFL season gets underway. No one knows what to expect from them after a shakeup of an offseason.
Kirk Cousins chose to leave town in free agency to join the Atlanta Falcons. To replace him, the Vikings signed Sam Darnold in free agency and drafted J.J. McCarthy in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Both of those guys could end up playing throughout the course of the season.
One of the biggest question marks has been about the future of Justin Jefferson. He has yet to sign an extension and there have been some rumors that he might be considering trying to get out of Minnesota.
Another question is on the defensive side of the football. The Minnesota Vikings’ secondary could use some help. Thankfully, there are still some quality free agents available.
Minnesota Vikings Might Be Suitor For Intriguing Free Agent Cornerback
ESPN’s Matt Bowen recently connected the Vikings to one of the more intriguing free agents still available on the market. He thinks they could be a good fit for cornerback Adoree’ Jackson.
“The Vikings drafted cornerback Khyree Jackson out of Oregon in the fourth round of April’s draft. He’s long at 6-foot-4 and has the physical traits to challenge wide receivers. But there’s still a need to add cornerback depth for an aggressive defense under coordinator Brian Flores that will heat up the pocket. Last season, Minnesota led the NFL with a blitz rate of 49.4%. That’s a combination of zone and man pressure, which fits the aggressive coverage traits and eyes of Adoree’ Jackson.”
Jackson certainly could be a good fit for the Minnesota Vikings’ defensive scheme. He is one of the best free agents on the market and would give the team a major upgrade in the secondary.
During the 2023 season with the New York Giants, Jackson ended up recording 63 total tackles to go along with a forced fumble, an interception, a defensive touchdown, and eight defended passes.
Granted, he’s not a true lockdown cornerback. Perhaps a guy like Stephon Gilmore would be a better option to look at. However, as the article snippet above states, he’s a great fit for the defensive scheme that Brian Flores runs.
If the Minnesota Vikings want to fight to be a potential playoff contender, they’ll need to get aggressive. They’re in a pass-heavy division with Jordan Love, Caleb Williams, and Jared Goff quarterbacking the other teams in the NFC North. Adding Jackson would be a nice step in the right direction.
