Minnesota Vikings superstar Justin Jefferson is also waiting on a new deal. However, unlike some of his other compatriots around the league that have opted to hold out on playing until their respective contract extensions are in place, Jefferson’s saga has been far less dramatic.
At this point, it appears that the All-Pro wide receiver is about to get rewarded for his patience.
Justin Jefferson, Minnesota Vikings Could Announce Extension ‘Very Soon’
Dianna Rusinni of The Athletic has provided a key update on Jefferson’s contract negotiations with Minnesota. With the 24-year-old’s rookie contract set to come to an end next year, both sides have been working hard to come to terms on a new deal. Apparently, this saga is now nearing its conclusion:
“Two weeks ago, when I was in Minnesota, I asked Justin Jefferson about the status of his deal. He had no updates for me, saying he, ‘doesn’t like to discuss his business.’ Fair. However, he did say it with a huge smile, probably because he knows this team has been motivated to get it done.
“Jefferson has practiced all of training camp, trusting the team will give him a contract that could make him the highest-paid non-QB player in the league. (I’m sure Bosa and Jones also hope to take the title.) Good news for Kirk Cousins, I learned there are no concerns that if a deal isn’t reached Jefferson would miss games. Based on my conversations, this is looking to be a contract that will be announced (and celebrated) very soon,” Russini wrote.
It wouldn’t be too difficult to make a case for Jefferson being the most valuable non-quarterback player in the entire NFL. Well, it seems that the Vikings are well aware of this fact and they seem willing to pay the reigning Offensive Player of the Year his weight in gold.
For context, the highest-paid player in the league right now who is not a quarterback is Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald. The seven-time All-Pro DT penned a massive three-year, $95 million extension with the Rams last year, allowing him to pocket close to $32 million per season.
As they always say, however, records are there to be broken, and if there’s one superstar in the league that is worthy of resetting the market, you have to say that it’s Justin Jefferson.
