Mike Vrabel, head coach of the New England Patriots, recently shed light on the team’s strategy for their No. 4 overall pick in a press conference at the Gillette Stadium. The Patriots have the fourth overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, and are eager to make full use of it.
New England finished last in the AFC East in the 2024 NFL season after winning only four games and losing 13. The Patriots played their final game of the season against the Buffalo Bills winning 23-16, but the win was too late for New England to make it to the playoffs.
“I’d venture to guess it’s probably a little too early for that. In my experience, probably a little too early for those discussions. A lot of those take place next week as we get a little further along in the draft process. I think there’s still some preparation and some front office managing that occurs and the coaches reports. It’s probably a little too early for some of those discussions to occur” New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said to reporters at the press conference about the team’s draft prep.
In the previous season, Mike Vrabel was a consultant with the Cleveland Browns, and was brought in as a replacement to Jerod Mayo. This will be Vrabel’s second assignment as head coach. His previous stint as head coach was with the Tennessee Titans, whom he coached from 2018 to 2023.

Vrabel started off his coaching career with the Ohio State Buckeyes as a linebackers coach. His first gig with the NFL was with the Houston Texans as a linebackers coach. Before stepping into coaching, Vrabel played in the league for the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots and lastly the Kansas City Chiefs before moving to coaching.
Mike Vrabel Says He Will Go For Best Player Rather Than Whom They Actually Need
In the same press conference on Tuesday, New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel also remarked that the team will have its priorities straight when it comes to the type of player they are looking for in the upcoming draft.

While some coaches and teams would focus on getting the player whose skills they need in their roster, Mike Vrabel went on to admit that his Patriots would be trying to simply bring in the ‘best player’ regardless of whether they suit the needs of the team or not.
