Per a statement Monday, the Pittsburgh Steelers are extending head coach Mike Tomlin. Steelers fans had mixed reactions after the news surfaced. Many fans were hoping for a clean break after last season.
Mike Tomlin was questioned last season
The Super Bowl-winning head coach has not won an AFC North title since the 2020 season. The Steelers have not won a playoff game since the 2016 season. As previously discussed on GH, even former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger thought Tomlin was losing control last season:
Tomlin has received heavy criticism from fans and pundits this season for the Steelers’ play this season. Last week, former Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger pointed out systemic issues with players on the roster and poor in-game decisions that suggest Tomlin has lost control in Pittsburgh.

Tomlin engineered a playoff appearance last season despite the many issues on offense. He fired his offensive coordinator, Matt Canada, midseason. He also benched Kenny Pickett in favor of Mason Rudolph at the end of the season.
Following the 2023 season, Tomlin has a 173-100-2 record in the regular season. He’s 8-10 in the postseason.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are extending Tomlin for three years
Despite the rumors surrounding his job status in Pittsburgh, the Steelers ownership affirmed their faith in Tomlin on Monday. Per a statement by the Steelers, the team extended him for three more years. His contract will run through the 2027 season.
President Art Rooney II said the Steelers have confidence in Tomlin to get back to having success in the postseason:
“Mike Tomlin’s leadership and commitment to the Steelers have been pivotal to our success during his first 17 years as head coach,” said Steelers President Art Rooney II. “Extending his contract for three more years reflects our confidence in his ability to guide the team back to winning playoff games and championships, while continuing our tradition of success.”
Tomlin understands he needs to perform with the new extended. His goal is to win another championship:
“I am appreciative for this contract extension and thankful for Art Rooney II for his support during my first 17 years in Pittsburgh,” said Tomlin. “We are continuing to work diligently to get back to where we belong – sustained playoff success with the ultimate goal of winning the franchise’s seventh Lombardi Trophy.
“I am very excited to get the 2024 season underway and provide our fans with a memorable year.”

i’d say it’s a W, let’s just hope we can finally win a playoff game with the roster especially knowing the fact this is the best our QB situation has looked since 2018.

If any other coach doesn’t win a playoff game for 7 years they get fired. Only Tomlin gets an extension. Let’s hope he figures it out.

Tomlin never won a Super Bowl…with his coaching .
He didn’t pick one player on the team. Its called inheritance. So his record is 0.
