Mike McCarthy, former head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, is most likely to take a year off rather than pursue a head coach role with the New Orleans Saints, in the upcoming NFL season according to NFL insider Brian Baldinger. McCarthy has failed to find a job as a head coach after being let go by the Cowboys, and only has been offered an offensive coordinator role.
The New Orleans Saints started off the 2024 NFL season on a promising note, but performed badly and dropped down to the last spot in the NFC South after winning five games and losing 12. In their last game of the season, the Saints played against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and lost the game miserably 27-19.
“I would think that maybe there’s eight offensive coordinator positions that were open as of (Monday). What do you think just being an offensive coordinator or take the year off? I think you’d probably take the year off.” Brian Baldinger said to Sportskeeda.
Under Mike McCarthy’s leadership, the Dallas Cowboys finished the season ranked third in the NFC East with seven wins and ten defeats. If McCarthy does manage to grab the role of head coach with the New Orleans Saints, the team will get someone with vast experience. McCarthy started his coaching experience with the Fort Hays State team as a graduate assistant and landed his first head coaching role with the Green Bay Packers back in 2006.
Mike McCarthy Will Not Be Coaching In 2025
Meanwhile, it was recently announced that Mike McCarthy will not be taking on a head coach role in the upcoming NFL season. Reportedly, McCarthy will be focusing on getting hired in the next 2026 NFL season. After being kicked out by the Dallas Cowboys, McCarthy was interviewed by a number of teams, including the Chicago Bears.
However, he failed to grab any particular role. Even though he might not have performed his best in the 2024 NFL season with the Dallas Cowboys, McCarthy seemed confident that he would continue doing a great job with the team, and even went on to press that he is a “winner”.
This is of course not the first time that Mike McCarthy has taken a break from coaching. After he was let go by the Green Bay Packers back in 2018, McCarthy did not get a role with any team, and instead had to take a rest period and then managed to join the Dallas Cowboys in 2020.
