The Kansas City Chiefs will have more limited options at wide receiver this offseason after big news out of Tampa Bay Monday morning. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were able to come to terms with a star player the Chiefs had their eyes on.
The Kansas City Chiefs have WR issues
The Chiefs already cut veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdez-Scantling for cap space purposes. The team could move on from Kadarius Toney after a 2023 season filled with issues on the field and off. The Chiefs are expected to try to add a veteran wide receiver in free agency and take a rookie in the draft.
Mike Evans will not be headed to the Chiefs
One popular idea for the Chiefs was Mike Evans. However, per multiple reports, the Buccaneers signed Evans to a two-year deal worth $52 million. $35 million will be guaranteed. Adam Schefter with ESPN said the Chiefs were expected to be interested in Evans.
Schefter lists Tee Higgins, Michael Pittman, Calvin Ridley, Odell Beckham Jr., and Michael Thomas as top possibilities for teams at wide receiver this spring.
Mike Evans was projected to be one of top, if not the top free-agent wide receiver available. The Chiefs, amongst others, were expected to be interested. Now the top free-agent WRs include Tee Higgins, Michael Pittman, Calvin Ridley, Odell Beckham Jr. and Michael Thomas. https://t.co/OPWOVf02KO

The Chiefs have limited options in FA
Higgins received the franchise tag from the Cincinnati Bengals. However, the Bengals could shop Higgins around before the start of free agency. It’s doubtful the Chiefs would be in the market to trade for Higgins.
Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard made it clear last week during the NFL combine he has no intentions of letting Pittman walk into free agency. Chiefs fans can cross Pittman off their list of potential wide receivers for 2024.
Ridley is a possibility. The Jacksonville Jaguars like what he did in the 2023 season, but they might not have the resources to bring Ridley back in 2024. The team needs to give star pass rusher Josh Allen a new deal and has to think about extending Trevor Lawrence in the future.
Thomas and Beckham are aging wide receivers who have dealt with injuries and low production in the previous few seasons. They won’t be the same types of home run hits the team needs next season. Evans was their best shot in the veteran receiver market.
The Chiefs must add another young talent in the draft to complement Rashee Rice.

What a crock and a waste of time from another Chiefs hater. We didn’t want Evans, we avoid the high price tags for tired talent and our GM finds gold at a reasonable price. We’ll be back for another super bowl there Jordan.
