The Kansas City Chiefs are adding a key defender for 2025 a day after an NFL executive was quoted bashing the front office for a choice they made this offseason at safety.
The Chiefs let veteran safety Justin Reid leave in free agency. He signed a three–year deal with the New Orleans Saints worth $31.50 million.
NFL executive took a shot at Kansas City Chiefs safety decision

Per Mike Sando of The Athletic, an NFL executive thought the Chiefs made a mistake by not re-signing Reid to a team that has a defensive identity. Kansas City had limited options with skilled players like Reid because they “miscalculated” the offensive line in 2024.
The Chiefs maintained continuity at receiver by re-signing Marquise Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster. They let safety Justin Reid leave, a move one exec questioned, suggesting Reid was an underrated enforcer who would be missed.
“They realize they are a defensive football team with a Hall of Fame quarterback (Patrick Mahomes),” this exec said, “and they are saying, ‘Pat, it is on you to elevate your skill players. We miscalculated on your protection, and it cost us a three-peat. Now, we are going to recalibrate up front.’”
The Chiefs are signing Mike Edwards

Per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Chiefs are bringing back Mike Edwards on a one-year deal.
“Reunion: Veteran safety Mike Edwards is signing with the #Chiefs on a one-year deal, per source,” Pelissero posted on X. “Back with the team he won a Super Bowl with two years ago.”

Edwards, a third-round pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019, signed with the Buffalo Bills in 2024. He was released in November after only playing three games for Buffalo.
He spent time with the Tennessee Titans and the Buccaneers in 2024, starting in two games for Tampa Bay.
Edwards has appeared in 63 games and started in 25 during his six-year NFL career. He’s recorded 247 tackles, nine tackles for loss, three sacks, 27 passes defensed, and one forced fumble.
The Kentucky alumn won Super Bowl LV with the Buccaneers and LVIII with the Chiefs.
