The Michigan Wolverines are one of the most successful programs in college football history. As the sport changed, they adapted. The school is having to adapt once again. In this era of college football, NIL is king. Programs must have a way to pay players if they hope to secure top-tier talent. Michigan made a huge step today as the school announced plans to expand its NIL operations.
Michigan Wolverines Expand NIL Operations
The school has hired Learfield and Altius Sports Partners to help manage their operations. These companies will take care of the business side of the operations. Athletic Director Warde Manuel had this to say about the deal.
“I am pleased to announce this unique and strategic investment through a new agreement with Altius Sports Partners and the growth of our Learfield relationships. The dedicated roles through ASP and Learfield provide a crucial step forward in supporting and empowering our student-athletes while combining three powerful brands aligned to capitalize on the dynamic opportunities within the realm of NIL.”
The representatives will have a direct line to the athletic director. Michigan might be showing us the future of how college football will be run.
Is This The Future?
NFL teams have a GM because there is a salary cap to manage. This has a very similar feel to it. ASP and Learfield will help the university make sure they have a steady stream of funds coming in to help pay players. Ann Arbor may become a more attractive destination as they have a structure ready to give players money. It will be interesting to see if other programs follow suit or whether this is something unique Michigan is trying.
NIL is here whether we like it or not. Michigan is making sure they are going to be contenders for a long time. Will others follow this model?
