Michigan Football: Fans Confused with Report of HC Sherron Moore Coaching Without an Official Contract

Last Saturday, the Michigan football team downed the Fresno State Bulldogs 30-10. It was their first game since they had bested the Washington Huskies in the College Football Playoff Championship Game last season, winning their tenth title in program history and first since 1997. Next weekend, Michigan will face its first real challenge since going undefeated in 2023, hosting the top-ranked Texas Longhorns. It will also be head coach Sherron Moore’s first opportunity to make a big splash as the team’s leadman since taking over for his predecessor, Jim Harbaugh.

On Thursday, reports surfaced that Moore, the 21st head coach in Michigan football history, is operating without an officially signed contract. Additionally, Athletic Director Warde Manuel indicated several assistant coaches are working without a signed agreement, leaving many fans needing clarification about the operation in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

According to On3Sports and Michigan beat writer Aaron McMann:

Sherrone Moore is coaching without an officially-signed contract, Michigan AD Warde Manuel confirms.

“They just don’t happen overnight, and there are things that have popped up. But they’re being worked on. Sherrone knows our commitment to him; we know his commitment to us and the same thing with the assistant coaches.”

Manuel appeared on the Conqu’ring Heroes Podcast, confirming that Moore and other assistant coaches have not yet put pen to paper regarding an official contract but that negotiations are nearing a close. Michigan football named Moore the head coach in late January after longtime frontman Jim Harbaugh darted for the NFL. Moore served as the offensive coordinator for the Michigan Wolverines last season, scoring 30 points per game (70th-best average in the FBS).

However, Michigan continues to work through the fallout of the 2023 sign-stealing scandal involving former analyst Connor Stalions. The NCAA confirmed Moore deleted text messages to Stalions, which was crucial to the investigation. Nevertheless, fans are left confused and stunned by the idea of Moore coaching the Wolverines with virtually no job security. Fans flooded social media to express their confusion:
